The 2021 Game Developer Conference is just days away! Online only again this year, but we will still be there virtually. If you are a professional game developer, you are likely already familiar with this conference. However, if you are looking to get into the industry, or want to learn more about how games are made from those in the know, it's the place to be.
I have been attending GDC since the mid-1990's when it was just a few hundred people...yeah, that old I know. I do attend some 3D graphics technical sessions, but I find branching out into new areas like production or art is a great way to learn new things. I especially enjoy attending the game post-mortem talks. These are typically presented by one or more developers or directors from the original game team, and give a timeline or story overview of the development of the game from start to finish.
This year, there are two that I am particularly interested in attending:
Classic Game Postmortem: 'Star Wars Galaxies', Presented by Raph Koster and Richard Vogel
Classic Game Postmortem: 'QUAKE': THE END OF THE ORIGINAL ID, Presented by John Romero
Also, GDC is a great place, even more so when it was in person, to meet new people in the industry, make new friends that will no doubt help you later get that new job, or contract.
Hope to see you there! (virtually, of course)
